ReThread

This project was a rapid prototype project, which had to be eco/sustainability focused. During my ideation phase I asked myself clothing, or threads of clothing. How can it be repurposed into more clothing or textile products, such as blankets and the like? Then I decided on creating yarn from these scraps that would then be repurposed back into the textiles industry.
Fast fashion has begun to run rampant over the last few years. It has generated tons of clothing that just adds to the steadily increasing textile waste in U.S. Landfills. The most recent data on the waste management for the textile industry is from 2018 which states that in 2018 alone 17 million tons of textiles were created. And Per the EPA, it is said that the recycling rate for textiles was 14.7 percent in the same year, with only 2.5 million tons recycled. Even more shocking is that of that 2.5 million tons, only 325,000 tons consisted of clothing.
